Casemate Publisher & Book Dist.. 2012. Book Club Edition. . Trade paperback. New. BRAND NEW Book Club edition. 203 p. 9" x 6" . Review by Gerhard L. WeinbergIn the 1970s Baron Rudolf-Christoph von Gersdorff-an important figure among the tiny number of German officers who turned against Hitler and hoped to kill him-wrote these memoirs to which his daughter provides an introduction; both now published for the first time. The reader is provided with an excellent account of how an aristocrat from the Silesian portion of Germany became an officer in the German army of the Weimar Republic and turned against Hitler before the war, not as it was being lost as others did. While the account of the military operations in the parts of World War II in which he was involved include the usual shifting of blame for all errors to Adolf Hitler, it is within that account that Gersdorff offers fascinating insight into the group of officers in the headquarters of German Army Group Center on the Eastern Front who repeatedly tried to kill Hitler. One of those attempts involved Gersdorff blowing himself up along with Hitler, which was aborted when the Führer quite quickly left the building where this was to occur. The author shows how obviously criminal orders, such as those calling for the killing of captured Soviet political officers, influenced some officers to resist. The practical issues of acquiring appropriate explosives for an assassination attempt receive the attention they deserve. The reaction of officers to the acceptance of a huge bribe from Hitler by army group commander Field Marshal Günter von Kluge is striking, though Gersdorff at the time of writing the memoirs did not know that all field marshals, full generals, and equivalent naval officers accepted bribes as well. Those readers interested in the tactical development of the war on the Western Front will be interested to read here an account by an important German staff officer involved inextricating troops from the Falaise pocket into which they had been trapped after the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead. Here there is also the German side of General Patton's disastrous raid to attempt the freeing of American prisoners of war held in the Hammelburg camp. After the German surrender, Gersdorff finds himself shunned and even physically threatened by other German prisoners of war who learn of his opposition to the Nazi regime that they had served faithfully into its final days. After his release, Gersdorff muses, not surprisingly, on how he had come to escape the secret police as one of the very few who had been involved in theplots against Hitler to survive when so many of those with whom he had been associated had been killed or had committed suicide to avoid naming others under torture. Readers will think it only appropriate that after his release from prisoner of war camp, Gersdorff played a significant role in a major charitable organization. .

To his close associate, Baron Rudolf-Christoph von Gersdorff, Henning von Tresckow said, "The world has to be set free from the biggest criminal of all time. He must be struck down dead like a mad dog who threatens all mankind!" Gersdorff and Tresckow were among the men whose moral courage drove them to resist the National Socialist movement and to attempt the ultimate - the assassination of its leader, Adolf ***. Gersdorff recounts the discreet recruitment of resistance members and his own failed attempt on *** s life on 21 March 1943. Over a military career that saw the end of cavalry warfare and the beginning of the atomic age, Gersdorff met the principal people in the German military. His honest account of some of *** s most "loyal" officers provides great insight into the resistance movement within the Wehrmacht. During Operation BARBAROSSA in 1941, Gersdorff served in Army Group Center as the intelligence liaison with the Abwehr. He reported the discovery of mass graves of thousands of Polish officers, which became known as the "Katyn Massacre." As chief of staff of the L***II Army Corps on the Atlantic Wall, when the main German force was threatened with encirclement, Gersdorff planned the Army s escape from the Falaise pocket, for which he was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
