The title is taken from the ancient name for the djembe drum. The phrase "Anke Djé Anke Bé" is a call to assemble; an encouragement for everyone in the area to come together; to unite. The phrase was shortened to "djenibe" and later became "djembe." The djembe is literally a unity drum. The purpose of this book is to provide students of djembe and dunun music with a tool for reference and study. This 136 page volume features over 70 pages of musical notation and over two hours of djembe and dunun music on two audio CDs. Two additional volumes are planned in this series. The rhythms covered in volume 1 are: Birea Dansa, Dansa, Didadi, Domba (Soli or Sugu), Goi (Sunu), Jondon, Komo (Tansolé), Koredjouka, Madan, Sandia (Lamba), Sigandi (Maraka) and Woloso. Students can hear the djembe and dunun accompaniment parts for each rhythm as well as at least one djembe and one dunun solo by Abdoul Doumbia. Students can read Abdoul's own explainations of the cultural context of each rhythm. Those familiar with Abdoul will recognize his tone in the many asides, musings, and words of encouragement. A new system of rhythmic notation is presented in this book. The system is highly geometric and is very understandable. All accompaniments and complete solos are transcribed in the book and the transcriptions are time-coded. Within each solo transcription some critical melodic phrases or themes have been highlighted. Paperback, Label: 3idesign, 3idesign, Product group: Book, Published: 2006-01, Studio: 3idesign, Sales rank: 5724858.
