The book is a response to political realities in Camden. I have been working with community groups in Camden as a community organizer since 1978. In the last decade, it has gotten harder and harder for legitimate community concerns to get a response. Residents organize, set priorities, and present them to public officials at appropriate forums, only to be ignored. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions got spent on waterfront development projects that weren't benefiting residents. I finally realized that the root of the problem rested with a small group of leaders who were controlling more and more of what goes on in Camden. They have assembled so much control and money that they think they can do whatever they want. Then came the takeover, removing the last shred of accountability. The final straw came in Cramer Hill, where 800 residents protested a redevelopment plan, only to see it get approved anyhow. The residents' own neighborhood plan got tossed aside like a bag of trash. At the same time, we learned that Norcross' behind the scenes maneuvering was behind the loss of the opportunity to preserve Pettys Island as a regional resource. I terminated some of my part-time work and other commitments so that I could work on this project. I assembled a review team to offer critical comments on the book. As soon as they saw the first draft, they decided a shorter version targeting Camden residents should be produced and out prior to the May 10 municipal election. We had no idea then that the daily newspapers would join the fray, responding to the Norcross tapes. Paperback, Label: Thomas R. Knoche, Thomas R.
