This memoir is an edited collection of the correspondence of Larry Schlasinger, a journalism student from a small town in North Dakota. His parents were Russian Jews who emigrated from Odessa during the pogroms at the beginning of the 20th century. The letters start with his years at the university. After graduation Larry enlists in the U.S. Army to fight in World War II for the country that gave his parents freedom. The timeline follows his training, his involvement in intelligence work, and the continued support and concern of his family. Larry, who spoke French, was sent into Normandy before the Allied invasion to prepare the terrain. He was wounded in the battle for Cherbourg and died at age 22 in hospital in England. Through the letters, the individual personalities of his family members - father, mother, three sisters and a brother - come to life.
