History treats most individuals as “nobody’s” of necessity and focuses on the individuals more critical to the contemporaneous public matter is. But to all of us and our circle of families and friends we are “somebody”. Our friends and family impact our daily life in a far more personal way than the historical “somebody” figures do. The purpose of this work is for the identification of the Comanche families enumerated in historical records and Census data and to identify those who were related to each other. Even though left out of the history, every individual is important to their families, friends and community. This work attempts to collect, personalize and identify those members of Comanche families whose names were recorded in some manner over the last 250 years in books, letters, census records, historical explorative reports, news articles and other memorandum. History is often impersonal to most, in that it records and re-writes past events and mentions only a few individuals who were important to those events. Of necessity, it leaves out the majority of the others. While the individual Comanche not considered as important as those other personages who are historically identified, they are the real people who we all can most easily identify with. Over thousands of years the Comanche developed many customs and taboos, as has every society. As time passes, some are forgotten and others changed to meet the needs of contemporaneous life. One of the customs was to refrain from the mentioning of the names of those who have passed. During the times of the Comanche history there was an absolute need to focus on survival, they were forced to leave the past and deal with the struggles of survival of the day. That may have been the reason for the custom of not speaking of those who were gone. The intent of this is not to violate that custom but to help those of today and in the future know who their forebears were and how they related to others of that period and those of today. Fortunately the custom of never mentioning the dead was not fully practiced, otherwise names in this book would not be known today. And that would have been a great loss for the Comanche people and all of us. That’s what this book is about.
