In Raising Up the Champion Within You R.L. All items in this book are discussed in a manner that is easy to understand and to apply, yet effective and cross-denominational. This book is the first in a three part series about David’s life. A devotional/study workbook on the life of David will also accompany this series. This book begins with David’s anointing as king, continues through his defeat of the giant Goliath, and concludes with David’s initial service to, and abuse from, King Saul. Chapter 1 of this book is an introduction and review of David’s character, significance, and legacy. King David was one of the most influential of all Bible characters. So much so, that only Jesus Christ Himself is mentioned more in all of scripture. Jesus was even called the “Son of David.” Yet despite his achievements and place in history, very little resource material about David exists. David was the only Biblical character described as being “after God’s own heart.” The character and faith of David are reviewed to help us also become like God’s heart. Chapter 2 introduces and discusses the life of King Saul at the time of David’s arrival. Saul’s pride, selfishness, and flagrant disobedience causes God to reject him as king. Chapter 3 is when David is confronted with his true destiny and purpose for the first time. God used the prophet Samuel to anoint an unlikely candidate to be the next king of Israel. In this act we discover a powerful spiritual occurrence. The act of David’s christening is simultaneously an anointing to be king; a calling to be king; a prophetic word that he would be king; and David’s personal covenant from God that he would be king. Unlike man’s power, which is AC/DC, in the book the anointing/calling/prophetic word/personal covenant is collectively referred to as God’s “AC/PC power.” The rest of the book further discusses how to use AC/PC power to fulfill your dreams. Chapters 4 through 8 use the life of David, and other practical and Biblical examples, to present and explore specific detail regarding the initiation, process, operation, and manifestation of God’s AC/PC power in each of us. Specifically, we learn how God births and reveals dreams, purpose, and callings in us, despite past problems or current shortcomings. Chapter 9 takes us back to King Saul, still in power, but whom the Spirit of God just departed from. God’s Spirit left Saul and went to David when he was anointed as king. Then God causes Saul and David to meet. David’s eventual role as Saul’s armorbearer is discussed, and the patience and character of David is further revealed by his humble willingness to serve the man whom he will replace. In Chapter 10 crisis breaks out in the camp of the Israelites. They are confronted by an impossible situation – Goliath and the Philistine Army. Saul’s son and successor Jonathan is a witness to the humiliation Goliath causes, yet he does nothing, even though Jonathan is a proven warrior that had tasted great victory. For whatever reason, success did not give Jonathan what he wanted, so he refused to confront Goliath himself. What stopped Jonathan from defeating Goliath was that Jonathan allowed a seed of resentment to become planted in his heart. Like a weed choking out life, this resentment grew into a vicious stronghold that kept him from making any other great effort or achievement in his life. Chapter 11 presents Saul’s Tragic Trilogy: the three mistakes King Saul made that created and enabled the Goliath Situation chronicled in I Samuel chapter 17.
