The invention described in this book makes it possible to build a medical imaging device that detects cancer and other diseases at an early, curable stage; delivers a safe dose of radiation, permitting annual usage; results in improved image quality; and reduces cost to patients and their insurance companies. The invention can change the clinical character of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) into a preventive one, for use in early detection of cancer and other common diseases. The new system is not merely an incremental improvement in the current detector as a consequence of advances in technology but a qualitative breakthrough resulting in over 400 time the efficiency of the current device. It represent a major advancement in preventive health care that can substantially reduce deaths from cancer (the leading cause of death for people from 45 to 64 years of age in the US) and from other common disease, such as brain disorders and coronary diseases. To use the PET technology annually as a screening device, the required radioactive dose must be kept to a very small percentage of the average radiation per person from all sources in a year. In the United States the average radiation per person per year is about 360 mrem. Current PET require from 1000 to 1600 mrem radiation to the patient, too high for a yearly scan. The device presented in this book is designed to give good results with a safe radiation dose of only about 25 mrem, the radiation received during two intercontinental flights. The book, like a “cook book,” includes detailed specifications for implementations of PETs of different cost and performance to meet specific needs and budgets, depending upon the detector crystals used.
