Listening to the Thunder salvages and documents what was constructive from early feminist responses to violence, and examines, problematizes and deconstructs what is no longer useful or in fact, harmful. It is an honest offering, perhaps, some might argue, giving more ammunition to detractors and opponents who might read it looking for further excuses to dismiss male violence or the need to continue to fund shelters. However, in her own way, each contributor highlights the social imperative of continued funding to women's services -- especially for those who have survived violence. Listening to the Thunder sets a brave example of strength in vulnerability as it exposes the myth of a homogenous women's movement and unanimous feminist agenda by revealing blatant racism and homophobia, for example, between shelter workers. In "Patriarchy -- Now You See It," Deborah Prieur details the ways in which many political analyses of wife assault have been minimized, watered down and obscured in such a way that service providers no longer understand the issue as one of personal and social control of women. Although uncompromising in its assertion that male violence is pervasive and institutionally sanctioned, Listening to the Thunder moves beyond a reductive analysis of violence and oppression, and provides varied and sometimes uncomplimentary perspectives. Paperback, Edition: First Edition, Label: Women's Research Centre, Women's Research Centre, Product group: Book, Published: 1995, Studio: Women's Research Centre, Sales rank: 7413452.
