The settlers who came to Miscou in the 18th century wanted its isolation - the Acadians hid their after thjeir expulsion from Grand Pre, the Scots came after their expulsion by their chieftains, the Jersey people after the Napoleonic wars. It was the women's skills that made settlement possible on an island that was without contact with the outside world from freeze-up to break-up. The men supported their families by inshore fishing. They worked almost in bondage to the Jersey companies who controlled fishing in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Pioneer conditions prevailed on Miscou long after the rest of the Maritimes. But the technology of the 20th century fiinaly ended its isolation. Unfortunately it almost ended the fishing industry too.
