Volume One, Letters 1 - 44. (1973) Volume Two, Letters 44-93, ( 1982) These two volumes provide English translations of letters from the New [Jesuit] Missions in Canada, 1843-1852. They are not of the same form or style as the well-known Jesuit Relations for New France in the 17th Century, but their content -- rich and varied -- belongs to our history and therefore deserves our attention. The letters describe the mores of the society, its economic and material life, the cultural and spiritual values of Canadians at the time of the Union of the two Canadas: Quebec and Ontario. Ontario is the dominant venue for these letters. The authors describe their endeavors in Kingston, Toronto, Chatham, Sandwich (today's Windsor), and then among the Natives of Walpole Island, Manitoulin Island, Sault-SainteMarie, Thunder Bay, etc. The accounts are larded with uncensored episodes, reflection on the Native civilization, and fascinating descriptions, worthy to be included in Canadian anthologies. In short, these letters are documents of choice and contribute to the enrichment of our history. These volumes, in two parts, contain 92 letters written by Jesuit missionaries in Canada from 1843 to 1852. The Introduction, written by Fr. Lorenzo Cadieux, S.J., the editor of the letters, provides a background of information to enable the reader to see how the letters fit into the background of the country at that time Translation of the volume was begun by the late Fr. George Topp, S.J. and completed by William Lonc, S.J.. In general, the translation is fairly close to the original French, with due regard for producing an easily readable English version. Occasionally, a word or two were added to clarify a passage -- these additions are usually put inside [square brackets]. The introductions includes detailed comments regarding the translation.
