Lanigan, SK, Canada: Snowmobile Research Publishing, 2000 Hard cover bound with color illustrated covers. More than 800 pages, over 1200 photographs, diagrams and illustrations. A huge compendium of Snowmobile history. " The history of snowmobile development in North America is an exciting adventure in true pioneering spirit. This book covers that amazing journey from the early 1900s to 1960 and beyond, where often amusing experiments in design and construction led the way to a blending of power and hi-tech engineering with comfort, safety and reliability. Written by L. Allister Ingham, As the Snow Flies brings together in an enjoyable and highly readable style the enterprising stories of companies and people who made significant contributions to snowmobile development. With hundreds of photographs, in-depth data and specifications of an amazing number of models and prototypes, along with never before seen historical images, this book is a must have, not only for all snowmobile enthusiasts, but for anyone interested in a vibrant and entertaining account of entrepreneurs, pioneers and visionaries." Contents; 1.THE LOMBARD LOG HAULER ................ Alvin Lombard of Waterville, Maine constructed his first machine in 1900, using a steam engine for power and a unique steering system. This huge mechanical monster weighed in at 20 tons! 2.ADALBERT LANDRY ......................... Experiments began in Mont Joli, Quebec in 1920. About 100 two track machines were eventually built here between 1922 and 1940. There were both passenger models and freight hauling models. 3.THE WHITE SNOWMOBILE ................... The White Snowmobile was developed in West Ossipee, New Hampshire in 1923 by Vero White, and was offered in three different tread widths. Even the Egyptians bought one of these machines for use in sand. 4.SNOW BIRD - SNOW FLYER .................. B. P Arps and Adolf L. Langenfeld, both of New Holstein, Wisconsin, worked sometimes as partners and sometimes as competitors on these automobile conversion snowmobiles. One of the several thousand built went to the South Pole for use by Admiral Byrd in 1931. 5.J. ARMAND BOMBARDIER ................... Bombardier began his experiments with a propeller driven vehicle in 1922, but went on to produce both the large twin track type of snowmobile as well as the single track design. His introduction of the Ski-Doo in 1958 started a snowmobile boom and resulted in Bombardier becoming the world's largest producer of single tracked snowmobiles. 6.ESKYMOBILE/STILTMOBILE ................. In 1923 Henry Swansen of Almena, Wisconsin began development work on automobile conversion snowmobiles, using both Model T and Model A Ford chassis. His most interesting model was the STILTMOBILE which used wheels up to 64" diameter. Approximately 100 machines were manufactured. 7.THE ELIASON MOTOR TOBOGGAN ........... Sayner, Wisconsin is the birthplace of the single track "motor toboggan" which was the forerunner of the modern recreational snowmobile. Carl Eliason began his experimental work in 1924 with production taking place in Sayner, then in Clintonville, Wisconsin, and later in Kitchener, Ontario. 8.THE LORCH SNOWPLANE .................... Karl Lorch began development work at Spy Hills, Saskatchewan in 1928. He used a four ski design and even offered a hydraulically operated wheel conversion for bare ground operation. Production occurred over a 35 year time span during which Lorch became the world's largest snowplane producer. 9.THE FUDGE SNOW SEDAN ................... Robert Fudge started with a 3 ski design in 1929 but changed to a 4 ski arrangement in his later production. He manufactured a high quality, professionally constructed snow plane. Some models used aircraft engines while others used an industrial Chrysler engine with V-belt drive in order to lower the centre of gravity. One sale was made to far away Australia. 10.PAUL STROM AND GORDON GREST .......... Strom and Grest began work on snowplanes in 1929, one of which had the propeller in front, like an airplane. Strom went on to supply propellers for snowplane manufacturers in the 30's and 40's and oak skis for motor toboggan manufacturers in the 50's. 11.THE TUCKER SNO-CAT ...................... Emmit M. Tucker began experiments in 1931 with auger-type propulsion systems. He pioneered development of pontoon-type tracks and became a leading manufacturer of snow grooming vehicles. DAVREUX SNOWPLANE ................. This design was developed in Ninette, near Brandon, Manitoba in 1936. Joe Davreux used a Ford Model A engine and his machines featured a hand-operated drag type brake. 13.FRED MANSOFF ............................. Beginning in the late 30's the Mansoff machine was manufactured in Brandon, Manitoba. It was a light- weight two place style employing a special body design for improved air flow to the propeller. 14.THE INGHAM BROTHERS .................... In 1946 George and Allister Ingham began experiments with several types of snow vehicles. The Ingham Motor Toboggan, which had several unique features, was marketed from 1950 to 1963, and was the first Canadian designed single track snowmobile to be produced. Subsequently the Ski-Bee was produced from 1967 to 1970. 15.GORDON EGGLETON ........................ Eggleton did some experiments with snowplanes in 1946, but diverted to experiments with the motor toboggan type of machine in the early 50's. Instead of building and selling motor toboggans he sold construction plans throughout Canada. 16.THE HUSKYMOBILE ......................... Frank Smerch built his first motor toboggan in Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1949. Its' design was well suited for hauling heavy loads on relatively well packed trails. It was produced from 1951 to 1954, first at Flin Flon, then at Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba. 17.THE BOSAK POWER TOBOGGAN ............ Mike Bosak did his experimental work at Brokenhead, Manitoba, and produced machines from 1950 to the mid 60's. Some models used up to 40 H.P. which was unusual for this era. 18.BRUCE NODWELL .......................... He began experiments in 1950 and was a pioneer in the development of multi-tracked vehicles for use in the oil fields. His company also produced the Snoscoot single tracked vehicle from 1964 to 1967. 19.POLARIS INDUSTRIES ....................... Edgar Heteen and David Johnson formed the Heteen Hoist and Derrick Company in 1946. The name was changed to Polaris Industries Inc. in 1954 which marked the beginning of single tracked snowmobile development. The company went on to employ up to 1000 people at peak production periods. 20.THE CALL AIR SNOWCAR .................... Reuel Call had an aviation background which prompted him to develop the propeller driven type of machine in 1955. Production began in the mid 50's and was discontinued in the late 50's when tracked vehicles began to fill the demand for winter transportation. 21.CHARLES HASTMAN-ARCTIC GLIDER ........ Hastman produced a single tracked snowmobile with a unique engine position. Production took place from 1955 to 1957. 22.THE AUTOBOGGAN .......................... Harry C. Paul constructed a prototype single track machine in Winnipeg in the early 50's. Production models however were manufactured under contract by Polaris Industries and sold in Canada by H.C. Paul Limited of Winnipeg. Some models even used twin engines for greater reliability. 23.THE BOGGONA MOTORIZED TOBOGGAN ..... Ove Skovgaard and Karl Richter of Winnipeg manufactured their machines from 1958 to 1964. The Super and Pony models had lengths of 128" and 108" and were powered by 9.2 and 7 H.P. Wisconsin engines respectively. 24.THE SNOWBUG ...............Howard Schroeder began experiments with a two track machine in 1958. Production however consisted of only single track machines. The Snowbug was of a unique design and was produced until the mid 70's. 25.THE LESCHASIN MOTOR TOBOGGAN ........ Peter Leschasin produced a number of interesting and unique machines in Rossburn, Manitoba. The Leschasin Motor Toboggan was available with a complete cab and was produced in one and two passenger models from 1958 to 1966. 26.TRAIL-A-SLED, SCORPION ................... Dick Harrison, Glen Gutsman, and Eugene F. Harrison began development of snowplanes in 1959. These machines were produced until 1961 when a change to single tracked snowmobiles was made. The company's name was changed to Scorpion in 1969 and the new company was sold to Arctic Enterprises in 1979. 27.CHARLIE WINSLOW ......................... Winslow's air sleds, produced in the late 50's, were of the three ski design, with a very wide rear ski tread. They were ideal for hunting and even featured sliding canopies which could be opened for 'shooting on the go.' 28.ARCTIC CAT ................................. Arctic Enterprises was started by Edgar Heteen in 1961 and became the largest producer of single tracked snowmobiles in the United States. In peak years they manufactured over 100,000 machines per year and were assembling 1000 machines per day. 29.THE WIESE SNO-PLANE ...................... In 1961 Helmet L. Wiese of Swan Valley, Idaho began production of what were probably the fastest air sleds in existence. The wide stance three ski machine, powered by an aircraft engine, provided many wins at the snowplane races. . Hard Cover. As New-Unread-NOS-Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall.
