With the original prospectus laid in; Composed before the invention of writing, this poem comes out of the oral tradition and describes the dangerous liaison between goddess Aphrodite and the mortal Anchises. Their lovemaking takes place on the grassy slopes of Mt. Ida, with dangerous consequences for Anchises. It is one thing for a god to make love to a mortal woman, but the union of a goddess and a mortal always has unfortunate results. Translated by Susan C.
