Once upon a time, tucked away in the northeast corner of the state of Oregon, stood a mythological village called Higher Ground. The community, surrounded by tall snowcapped alpine peaks, was protected from the deep snows that drenched the mountains. The surrounding plateaus, like claws on a hawk, reached down and basked in the sunshine of the high desert. The rich alluvial soils and water from the numerous creeks allowed the valley folks to grow crops and prosper. All was not milk and honey in this, the first fifteen years of the third millennium, but life was good for most of the folks. They had learned how to share and get along with each other. They ran businesses collectively, took care or their children, played and had fun together. Outside the village, however, life was not so good. Social and economic turmoil were engulfing much of the nation, and some feared an outright collapse of the government. Life was not working well for many people, and they hungered for change. The besieged American President, Arthur Bradshaw, resigned. Dramatic changes were demanded. The vice President, Deborah Mandell, became the President, the first African American and first woman to assume that role. She had a bold vision, but needed help. She asked for volunteers from the mumerous egalitarian communities, which sprang up at the end of the 20th Century, to come out and help rebuild America. From Higher Ground came a diverse band of yound and old. Their adventures, succeses, loves, trials and tribulations, as they ran head on into a shattered American culture in the 21st Century, forms the basis of this story.
