Joseph Gershomsohn is Jewish.In exchange for his secret techniques with horses,Joseph Gershomsohn becomes Franz Joseph Von Hufberg Baron Von Breitenstein.But it is the Jewish peasant Joseph Gershomshon; to save a Jew being brutalized by an officer of the Royal Wittelsbach Hussars, intervenes. In a duel on horseback the officer is disarmed and humiliated becoming a life long enemy. Because of the duel, Joseph is forced to flee to America, where he continues his false identity: Franz-Joseph Von Hufberg Baron Von Breitenstein in certain circumstances, which bring him into the fiercest fighting in the Civil War. But it is as Joseph Gershomson that he falls in love with a Jewish Heiress. The adventure carries Joseph from the carnage of Cold Mountain to the decadence of the court of Louis Napoleon in Paris.
