[From the introduction page]: The common loon has captured the hearts and imaginations of wildlife enthusiasts across North America. The loon symbolizes the rocks, forests, and waters of northern lake regions and puts a stamp of "wildness" on country in which it is found. Each year, loons return to their nesting lakes, many of which they now share with human residents and vacationers. On these lakes, the loons' survival depends on the activities of volunteers who educate other lake residents and users about loons, protect nesting and chick rearing areas during sensitive periods, and collect information on numbers and habits. These effors have prevented further reduction of loon numbers and range in many areas and have resulted in restored populations elsewhere.
