Food Sex Art / The Starving Artists' Cookbook was a dual print and video project developed over five years between 1986 and 1991. Drawing on the notion that the New York art scene had broken down with privatization and the emergence of the "art star," Wolf and Lamarre looked to explore the personas and approaches of their featured artists by way of gastronomic engagement- their lifestyle as exemplified by what he/she cooked and ate. The resulting series spanning 5 programs of edited interviews and ad hoc cookery demonstrations ran to nine hours worth of video. The condensed version The "Highlights Tape" featured extracts of 25 of the practitioners over an hour and 43 minutes. Those chosen included Peter Beard, Louise Bourgeois, John Cage, Leo Castelli, Lisa Cieslik, Papo Colo, Tony Conrad, Quentin Crisp, Alan Shields, William Wegman, and Lawrence Wiener. Each clip acts as a fascinating, if at times knowingly banal, insight in to that most quietly revealing of daily practices, replete with a mix of anecdotal conversation and intimate ritual: from William Wegman's irreverent 'popping' of Vitamin C tablet (which end up all over the floor), through Lawrence Wiener's childhood recollections, to Papo Colo's preparation of super-frugal pre-Colombian cuisine, and John Cage's macrobiotic, perennial "Soup Des Jours".
