U.S.A.: Roswell Museum and Art Center Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, 1983. 92 Pages. Top of cover has very minor wear. Otherwise a tight original book with flawless interior text and illustration pages. This book is about the work of Agnes Tait, adopted New Mexican whose career and accomplishments as an artist should begin to receive the wider acclaim and recognition it deserves. Tait's subject matter, more than anything, separated her perceptual art from that of many other contemporary realist painters in New Mexico. She continually eschewed the regionalist approach; instead her visual references emanated from personal, intimate sources. The critical dialog generated by New Realism has afforded an opportunity and climate to re-evaluate the works of other realist artists whose work in the forties and later was outside mainstream modernist dominance. When Agnes Tait arrived in New Mexico in 1941, she had been preceded by two decades artists like Andrew Dasberg, Marsden Hartley, B.Jo. Nordfeldt, and Raymond Jonson. These artists had adopted a progressive art. In the context of a dynamic art scene, Agnes Tait faced the difficult task in achieving recognition for her delicate, realist paintings. Her style was related to the painterly, perspectivic space of traditional painting. The observer is firmly established outside the painting with a single, fixed point of view. This book about her exhibition offers the opportunity to review and recognize the work of an artist who spent a major portion of her career in New Mexico, where she was actively involved in her social environment.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. Illus. by Anderson, Judy - Design. 8 1/2" X 10 1/2".
