In the thirty years between 1890 and 1920, two million Jews emigrated to the United tes from Eastern Europe. Some of them went directly to Philadel , Baltimore, Boston and a few other cities on the East Coast, but the large majority passed through Ellis Island and settled on the Lower East Side 0! New York City. Wherever they made their homes, they struggled to create a new life for themselves among the tenements, inside the sweatshops, behind the pushcarts as they dreamed of and worked for a more just and compassionate world. PUSHCARTS AND DREAMERS is a collection of Yiddish stories written in the United States by ten authors who were themselves part of this immigrant scene. Life here was hard for those newcomers, but they made it more bearable by their determined striving to improve it. As one can see "from these stories, the grimness and the privation were character- istically leavened by large doses of hope, irony and humor. The authors represented in this anthology were among those who helped to develop in this country an ethnic literature unique in its quality and abundance.
