From Introduction: "I heard Johannes Gunnarshaug describe a Norwegian system which used a 'building within a building' to form an airspace between the inner and outer shells so that the inner building could stand in an artificially tempered climate. He reasoned that even the faint sunshine of Norwegian winters could produce enough heat to make a buffering air envelope warmer than the outdoor air, and that this warmer climate around the occupied inner building would importantly reduce the heating load on the inner space. We had built several sun-heated homes, using direct gain, water wall, and internal convective loop systems, and knew there are many good and simple ways to use sunshine effectively...I think a large part of the present controversy about the air-envelope system is due to the extravagant and misleading descriptions that are still being written about its performance. Some statements are not extravagant, when we consider facts like the Burn house's winter use of a tenth of a cord of firewood for supplemental heat and the still unproven conviction of some designers that we can do much better than that--but this is not yet the universally ideal system. I've seen many envelope houses that use much more fuel, two with envelopes that can't work at all, and many that I think will have high maintenance costs. The principles are simple but must be awarely applied. The physics of the transportation of heat by natural convection within the double shell became much more clear through measuring and graphing temperatures, and through the pooling of experience by designers, builders and owners that took place in a series of technical conferences we arranged in 1979 and 1980.
