Two seafarers provide three stories from the 1920s and 1930s relating to the search for the Danish sail training ship Kobenhaven, which went missing on a voyage from the River Plate to Melbourne in late 1928. Of the 60 persons aboard 45 were young cadets and the loss of this fine barque remains one of the mysteries of the sea. Tom Minto was third mate of the old steamer Junee, one of two ships chatered to search for the missing ship in the Southern Ocean below latitude 40 south. He recounts experiences on the search, extending almost four months in some of the roughest seas known, to record the details of a now little-known, maritime expedition. His second contribution recalls a tramp-ship voyage in 1931, during the Great Depression, on the Australian freighter Milluna. He was second mate and the first leg was from Australia to Great Britain with a cargo of wheat. The ship then sailed in ballast to Batum, on the Black Sea, to load cased kerosene and benzine for Darian on Russia's Pacific coast. The cased benzine proved a problem. The ship was not allowed to steam through the Suez Canal, for risk of fire. Ship's funds were insufficient to pay the 2000 pounds transit towing fee. The soulution --- sail back across the Mediterranean, down to the Cape of Good Hope, bunker at Durban and then across the Indian Ocean. The cargo was discharged, weeks late, at Darian and after six weeks at anchor the ship was ordered to south Australia in ballast to load wheat for Vladivistock. However, when 200 miles off the south of Western Australia the Milluna's tail shaft broke and there followed a selvage drama for the old ship and her crew. A great tale of 12 months of the "joys" and privations of Depression days voyages. In the final contribution Eric Stevens gives an account of his 1936 voyage from South Australia to Britain in the barque Parma, which sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, rather than the more normal Cape Horn route, making the trip in117 days. His is a fine account life at sea,under sail at the very end of the commercial sailing ship era. A small book, but a real maritime gem. First edition of 1984, limited to 1000 copies. 52 pages, the authors' b/w photos throughout, painting of Kobenhaven. Pictorial card covers are VG+, ditto the text block, no inscriptions. A small/light book.
