"Mark John Hammond was born in Sydney in 1844. When gold fever swept the colony in 1851 Mark's father who had been a farmer broken by a bad season joined the rush to the west. He was to return and take with him his family to the Braidwood goldfields. So at the age of nine Mark became a miner. For the next twenty years he continued to dig for gold, trying his luck on ten different New South Wales goldfields. His memories of these days, aided by notebooks kept on these various fields, are rich, absorbing & diverse. He was at the Lambing Flats riots, he was part of the rush to Forbes, he was at Hill Endduring the boom of 1869-72. Each experience was a unique one; in his twenty years of mining he came to know the goldfields "like few others of his time"." Size: 180mm - 250mm. 287 pages.
