Poised as we are on the brink of the millennium, it is an opportune time to consider what directions animal welfare thinking might take in the future, the implications of those directions for human uses of animals in education and science, and the initiatives we would like to see taken to safeguard the welfare of animals used in the educational and scientific arenas. Two conferences have been devised by ANZCCART to address these issues. The proceedings of the first one, organised by ANZCCART in Christchurch, New Zealand, in April 1994 are presented here. A companion volume will contain the proceedings of the second conference, entitled Animals and Science in the Twenty-first Century: New Technologies and Challenges, which will be held by ANZCCART in Melbourne, Australia, in October 1994.
