For cities are not just the sum of the "highlights" in guide-books or TV snap-shots. Each has its own particular appearance and setting, its own particular character and charm, its own "tale" to tell, its own song to sing. Paris is Paris, not Rome or London; and it can be intriguing to find out how and why. Most of our "Twenty Cities" are Western, but we shall also make brief detours into China, India, the Arab and Islamic world, and the Ancient Americas. For these, too, have a tale to tell, a song to sing; and while having a fascination of their own, they have contributed far more to the Vest than our traditional Western superiority-complex may have led us to believe...
