Educated at Cambridge, where he took quintuple First-Class Honours in the English Tripos and the Oriental Languages Tripos, he went on to receive his Ph.D. in classical Chinese Literature from the Australian National University, Canberra. Since then he has held posts in many universities, including Chairs in Tanzania and the United States. Name in the first page 12mo.
