Gerry Gray was an adventurous boy who during the 1930's depression, supplemented his family's meagre income by collecting used newspapers and reselling them to local merchants. His routine was disturbed by the excitement of the London to Melbourne Air Race and the visit to his town of Albury by His Majesty's son, the Duke of Gloucester. Gerry and his school mates decide to emulate the air race by holding a billy cart race down a road on a hill. Each billy cart is named after an aircraft in the real air race. Meanwhile, the daughter of the local Police Station is courting the son a prominent town businessman who has political aspirations focused on law and order issues. Gerry's friend's billycart is forced off the road by the businessman's vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Gerry throws a rock at the businessman when the friend is abused. Police are called and despite Police objections Gerry is arrested. The businessman resents the Police efforts to avoid a prosecution and fires the Police Sergeant's daughter, his employee. A DC 2 of the KLM Dutch Airlines, an entrant in the air race and in the lead, is forced down in Albury during a storm. The aircraft had lost its way and Albury's Mayor launched a major effort to locate it and guide it to Albury. All was working well until it is realised that the lighting on the improvised landing strip conflicted with lighting on a street running parallel to the strip's runway. Fearing a mistake the Mayor seeks Police help to put out the street lighting. The Police Sergeant's wife releases Gerry with instructions to use his confiscated sling shot to smash the globes. Just as the plane commences its landing in the direction of the street, the businessman stops Gerry's "vandalism".......
