This is an account of the difficult days of the 1930s, the economic depression years in Britain, and of Hitler’s war. I trained as a nurse the hard way at that time. When war broke out I joined the Queen Alexander's Imperial Military Nursing Service as a nursing officer. Bound for the Middle East my unit sailed in convoy around the Cape of Good Hope with the 51st Highland Division, 10½ weeks at sea. We watched them march off to prepare for the battles of El Alamein, and met them again when we tried to heal their wounds. My unit was left behind as the Eighth Army chased up North Africa after the Afria Korps. We mobilised and sailed from Alexandria to land with the troops on the beaches of Salermo under shell fire. The fighting was fierce and our work unceasing in the September cold rain of Italy. We followed the fighting up to Napoli and became a base hospital for the battles of Cassino and Anzio and on to Rome.When the invasion of Normandy commenced those safe at home in Britain called the Italian troops the “D-Day Dodgers”. At the end of the fighting in Europe we returned to the U.K. to be regarded as though we had been on holiday, and no home, no work, in civilian life and disillusion. The bright future for which those soldiers had fought and the hopes they had carried in their hearts was not there.
