" 'Sunken Sagas' re-writes the early history of Queensland. It destroys the long held myth that Matthew Flinders, in 1799, was the only European to observe the coast of Queensland during the half century after Captain Cook. The book reveals that the first whaler entered Queensland waters in 1793 (six years before Flinders), and that far from being forgotten this coast was to be visited by thousands of men in hundreds of whaleships during the next half century or more. Readers are given details of some of the ships and men involved, the extraordinary lives they led and the fates that befell them: shipwrecks, massacres, mutiny and piracy. Fully documented, this study is based on the writings of the old whalers, the observations of early explorers, (including Matthew Flinders himself), and on British and other shipping authority archives. The author provides a scientific account of whales of these waters, their biology and migrations and the impact of the whaling on their populations. He traces the effect the whalers had on the Aboriginal way of life, and the enormous consequences of whaling for the development of the colony." *Please Note* The shipping cost for this book for domestic (Australian) customers will be less [A$8.50] than the default quoted amount if the parcel weighs less than 500g after packaging.
