Readers are given details of some of the ships and men involved, the extraordinary lives they led and the fates that befell them: shipwrecks, massacres, mutiny and piracy. Fully documented, this study is based on the writings of the old whalers, the observations of early explorers, (including Matthew Flinders himself), and on British and other shipping authority archives. The author provides a scientific account of whales of these waters, their biology and migrations and the impact of the whaling on their populations.
