The Carling boys were blessed with the artistic ability of their mother and father which enabled them to earn more money than most other children, they could draw pictures and entertain passers-by. They were imprisoned for begging and sent to industrial schools and suffered harsh treatment. The also sailed before the mast in sailing ships at the age of 9 years, and one of them joining the Royal Navy. Great Britain: McIntyre Press, 2013. Paperback. Sunlight Beyond the Grave. Message to previous owner signed by the author. The Carling brothers lived alongside the River Mersey and in many ways were fascinated by the vessels that navigated the river every day. They hoped that one day they would be on one of those ships seeing the world. Michael Kelly pads the streets of his native Liverpool in soft shoes, gazing with affectionate quizzically at the changing ways of the world. But he has never forgotten how it was to have hard hands, when scarcity was everywhere and plenty was always just out of reach. So he knowns more than most that we are all part of the unfolding story - the man who riveted the steel plates is as important to the grand ship as the captain in his cabin. Indeed, Michael worked as a carpenter on such ships at the thunderling Cammell Laird yard in Birkenhead, before he was called to history, writing a series of wonderful books about the people he knows best, the people of the Mersey. This volume tells of how the impermanence of earthly life can be likened, literally in the case of the Carling brothers, to the exquisite chalk drawing on the pavement being rubbed away by the passing steps of indifference. Yet a measure of fame and fortune can be found by those with the courage to persist, even if sorrow sometines stalks their progress. The remarkable story of the Carling family was a lesser known part of Liverpool's past. Now, with skill, dedication and painstaking research, Michael Kelly makes the brave brothers live again for us. Illustrated. 240 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . Signed by Author. 1st Paperback Edition. Soft Cover. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Paperback.
