Synopsis: ''At the beginning of the 20th century with expansion of manufacturing and other commercial developments, there was a growing need to mechanise accounting to provide fast and accurate preparation of data. There were several adding and calculating machines around at this time, as well as book keeping machines that were virtually converted typewriters with an adding device attached, which would have been manually operated. There were at this time no accounting machines that had been designed as such from scratch. In fact the NRC machine took on its shape from that of a cash register, whereas Burroughs and other manufacturers were taking the design from the adding machine.''.
