In the mid 17th century internal strife in China caused the Dutch to seek alternative supplies of porcelain from the Japanese who, as well as supplying blue and white, introduced porcelain with coloured enamels into the Dutch market. This was the trigger for the Chinese to introduce famille verte and other enamelled wares into the European market and for the Dutch to learn how to enamel delftwares. These skills enabled them to enhance the decoration of Chinese and Japanese porcelain in the most fashionable styles and thus double or triple its value.
