[x], pages v to xxii or original edition (including title page), and 1125 pp. John Woody Papworth (1820-1870) was an English architect, designer and antiquary. He is chiefly remembered for "Papworth's Ordinary" (1874), a reference guide to British and Irish coats of arms arranged systematically according to their design. The original title page describers the book as being based "upon an entirely new plan, in which ther Arms are systematically subdivided throughout, and so arranged in alphabetical order that the names of families whose shields are found on buildings, monuments, seals, paintings, plate, etc., whether mediaeval or modern, can be readily ascertained." Prepared by John Papworth, the work has beern edited from page 696 by Alfred W. Morant. The book is sturdily bound in the original tan cloth covered boards with gold titling on a leather label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some light soiling on the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
