John F. Hamlin, Cambridge, 1986. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). As New/No Dust Jacket. In a general westerly direction from Cambridge are the remains of two airfields constructed for the Royal Air Force in the early days of the Second World War: RAF Oakington and RAF Bourn. Both built for Bomber Command, they were used by that organisation until the end of hostilities, but there the similarity ends. RAF Bourn was one of the many airfields originally conceived as satellite stations but which eventually became RAF Stations in their own right. The facilities there were never intended to be permanent, and, when the war ended the airfield was quickly relinquished and returned, in the main, to agriculture. On the other hand, RAF Oakington was built at the end of the nineteen-thirties expansion period, and was provided with permanent buildings of a good architectural standard. The airfield had a life-span of almost thirty-five years in RAF hands without a break, during which time it was occupied by three different Commands. Built, as already mentioned, for Bomber Command, and redundant in 1945, it was taken over by Transport Command, under which Oakington was involved in, among other activities, the Berlin Airlift of 1948. In 1950 the Station was handed over to Flying Training Command, which occupied it until the RAF's departure in 1975. In this book the author has set out to record both the highlights and major events which took place at Oakington and Bourn and the general pattern of everyday life, with particular reference to the wartime years. To avoid repetition, no attempt has been made to list every operation carried out by the Squadrons concerned. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 72 pages. illustrated by b/w. photo'S. & a map.
