Monochrome photographic illustrations on glossy silk art paper. John Henslow joined the army in August 1941 and, after six months in the ranks, passed out from OCTU in November 1942 at the age of 19. By April 1943 he was an officer in Queen Victoria's Own Madras Sappers and Miners at Bangalore, and a few months later was posted to the 'forgotten army' in Burma. He fought at the Battle of Kohima, and was in overall command of the company responsible for the longest assault crossing undertaken in the war - the mile long Irrawaddy at Nyaungu - which finally, after a tragic failure, victoriously set in train the Japanese retreat which was concluded by the dropping of the atomic bomb and the surrender of all enemy forces.
