Harlow, Essex: Harlow Arts Council . Very Good/No DJ. 1983. First Edition. Soft Cover. 8vo 0950872903 208 pages clean and tight. Harlow has many claims to artistic fame: The Playhouse is one of the busiest provincial theatres in Britain, offering over 500 performances a year in a unique mix of professional and amateur effort. The Alberni String Quartet, the only group to be based in and sponsored by a provincial town, was called one of the best six quartets in the world' when it appeared at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. The amateur Ballet Club has staged all the major classical works from `Sleeping Beauty' to `Rite of Spring' with guest stars from Beryl Grey and Nadia Nerina to Eva Evdokimova and Wayne Sleep. Dozens of pieces of sculpture by Rodin, Moore, Hepworth and others have been bought and placed, not in an art gallery to be seen by the few but on street corners throughout the town, to please and provoke everyone. And the town itself, fitted so carefully into its natural setting by master-planner Sir Frederick Gibberd, has been acknowledged to be a model of such art-forms as landscape architecture and town design. Sir Frederick is among the forty-three contributors to this book on the arts in Harlow. It is called The Long and the Short and the Tall in memory of a Harlow production of the play which won an all-England drama competition - and as a tribute to the many different people who (bless 'em all) have put their hearts into making Harlow such a success. The story is told largely in their own words, collated and edited by Paul M.S. Hopkins, a journalist who has played his own roles in the story as performer, critic and administrator and who was the author of the official history of Harlow Urban District Council. .
