From the introduction: "The Arte of Limming (1573) is the earliest English printed book on painting and is an orderly treatise describing some of the techniques of the illuminator. Its contents have more in common with medieval works on its subject than with subsequent printed books, which, with some exceptions, reflect a post-medieval concern with both art theory and practice. It describes some of the procedures of the illuminator in the order in which they would be employed in the execution of work. It begins with the drawing up of designs with a pencil followed by a pen, continues with the manufacture and application of mordants for metal leaf and goes on to describe the laying of gold and silver leaf. The manufacture of media for colours is dealt with next, followed by the préparation and tempering of colours. Several of the colours are fugitive, liable to fade from the effect of sunlight unless used in the normally closed pages of a book, and therefore would have been suitable only for illuminators. In addition, the unknown author specifically states that oil should never be used with which 'to limme or to write' and oil is quite unsuitable for the pages of books, A description of the manufacture of a black ink comes next, followed by a summary of what has gone before, and the treatise concludes with some colour mixes, recipes for varnishes, a masking fluid, pounce and others of a miscellaneous nature."
