This book was a (1975) cry for the future character of Irish Towns. Most Irish towns had remained unchanged (and a bit sleepy) for hundreds of years - but they were full of character and craftsmanship. The 1970's heralded a period of dramatic change and "progress" - Patrick Shaffrey's concern - the rapid change could lead to both uniformity and a level of mediocrity. This book was his attempt to point the way to a future - demonstrating how change can be accomplished, without destroying all that is worthwhile and beautiful.The book covers Towns and Villages from all over Ireland.The main book is in excellent condition - however the dust jacket is a bit "tatty round the edges" - but no attempt has been made to repair this minor damage - as it adds character (in keeping with the theme of the book!). This is a First Edition, printed by O'Brien's press in Dublin, in 1975. A great book for both lovers of Ireland and/or for those championing architectural progress - whilst maintaining the core character of the Town and Villages. Books.
