Until the close of the last century, one of the most important industries in Wales was metal mining and mellowed remains are to be found in almost every corner of the Principality. Its history has been told in a general way but I believe the need is growing for a more specific coverage devoted to individual mines, with guidance for those wishing to visit the sites and to explore the physical remnants for themselves. Indeed, only in this way can we really appreciate the difficulties facing the ‘old men’ and gain an insight into a forgotten world. High in the mountains between Llanidloes and Machynlleth lies Dylife, and in choosing it as my first subject I am conscious that here was neither the best-known nor the most productive of lead mines. Nevertheless, it achieved greatness in spite of a geographical isolation which in those days was almost complete. By the 1860s some of the most modern mining machinery in Britain found application at Dylife and its owners, who included Cobden and Bright the social reformers, were rewarded with huge profits.
