Sydney: Kangaroo Press, 1986. New ed.. Paperback quarto, very good condition, frontispiece map, music scores at rear, black & white text-photos, top edge faintly foxed, minor edgewear. 96 pp. After the disasters of Gallipoli and France, enlistments dwindled. This is the story of the pioneering great recruiting march from Gilgandra to Sydney in the latter half of 1915. Twenty-six men left the little Western town on the Castlereagh River and the number reached 263 by the time they reached Sydney. They were feted at each town on the route, and the story of their march has become part of the official war history of Australia. The author has recorded the story of the march step by step. He tells it first-hand from the lips of the last survivors - Leslie Greenleaf of Dubbo (since deceased) and Ernest May of Lithgow who joined the march at Wongarbon.

Kangaroo Press, Sydney, 1986. Edition Unstated. Softcover. Good Condition. Following the disaster of Gallipoli & the heavy casualties in France in the latter half of 1915, recruiting figures for enlistment in World War 1 dwindles. Numerous recruiting rallies became increasingly ineffective. It was at this dark hour that Gilgandra's butcher, R.G. Hitchen & his brother Bill, (the local plumber)) had the idea of organizing a route march of volunteers to Sydney, enlisting recruits as they marched. The idea caught the imagination of the public, & the Coo-ees (as the volunteers came to be known) became national heroes. The action of "Hitchen's Own" & the subsequent marches which followed were responsible for a dramatic upturn in recruitment figures." Card Covers. Size: 250mm - 330m. 96 pages.
