" Despite his long, distinguished public career, Senator John O. Pastore of Rhode Island remained an intensely private person. When he retired at the relatively young age of 69 he ordered his staff to destroy most of the correspondence in his office, deciding that his public life was a closed book, besides which, much of the correspondence dealt with his constituents' private problems which he felt should be kept confidential. Pastore's political career broke barriers not only in Rhode Island but also in the nation. He was the first Italo American to become governor and United States senator. He distinguished himself in several fields. One was civil rights; this book presents fresh material on his activist role in forging the civil rights legistation of the sixties. Another field was atomic energy, as Pastore served on the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy. A third field was communications; described in this book is his pioneering role in shaping US public televison and limiting the excesses of commercial televison. SIGNED BY JOHN O.
