Preface to the Third Edition Ever Since Sinai, which, since its first appearance in 1961. has been used in many college and university courses as well as in adult education classes and high school departments of religious schools, wants to fulfill a twofold task. In the first place, it tries to convey a sense of what Torah has meant to past Jewish Generations, what it means to some modern Jews, and what it could conceivably mean to others. It does not deal with the concept of Torah in isolation from related theological concepts, which would be a caricature, but within the framework of a whole complex of beliefs such as the doctrines of God, Election, Revelation, and the old Rabbinic conviction that an Oral Torah accompanies and supplements the Written Torah. From this perspective, Ever Since Sinai might be called a "phenomenology of Torah." Yet there is also a second aim which the author regards as being of no less importance. A considerable proportion of today's American Jewry is university educated. A university education, particularly in the Humanities, involves the exposure of the student to the kind of critical method with which various bodies of literature are studied. Torah, among other things, is also a body of literature. If, then, Torah literature is approached in a scholarly and critical frame of mind, many a cherished belief of the past will be seen to rest on foundations which modern scholarship calls into question. This situation has led, on the one hand, to a dogmatic rejection of the methods and conclusions of modern biblical scholarship, and, on the other, to an equally dogmatic rejection of religious belief. It is, however, the contention of this author that there is yet a third possibility.
