JWR: Jesus Would Recycle is Joe Johnston s answer to the question, What would Jesus do? But recycling is just the tip of the melting iceberg, according to the author. He says Jesus would do a lot more to help the suffering on our planet. It s not only practical, Johnston emphasizes. It s also spiritual. Jesus asked us to lead a more happy, healthy, sustainable life. He goes even farther back to the story of Noah and the great flood for holy directives about creation care. After a fascinating discussion of the science of the ark, and the impossibility of getting penguins to the Middle Eastern desert to board the boat, Johnston concludes that the tale of Noah is a myth, a simple children s tale. So why is such a violent story in the Bible? The point, Johnston says, is to say we re supposed to take care of our earthly home, and it will take care of us, but it s a message Christians have failed to heed. And he has little patience with religion that ignores suffering of any species. As Johnston puts it, there are starving babies and drowning polar bears, and neither cares about the religion of anyone who ll save them. His point in writing specifically about environmental issues for Christians is that they ve been left out of the discussions of eco-action, and it was their responsibility to begin with. One of the best-known scriptures in the New Testament, John 3:16, says that God so loved the world. Not only people, Johnston says, but the whole world. Just as Jesus was about spirit and flesh, God s message of saving the planet is both spiritual and practical. Still, JWR: Jesus Would Recycle isn t aimed only at Christians. Johnston wants everyone to know what Jesus says about earth care, so we can talk with Christians in their own terms about these life-giving matters. This may be the most urgent book for sustaining life on earth, he says, because it can t be done without the Christians. There are about 1.5 billion people who ascribe to some version of Christianity. Their hands are on the throttle of government, industry, and our wasteful, destructive lifestyle. Everyone else can change to fluorescent bulbs, drive electric cars, and live green, earth-friendly lives, and the Christians can still kill us all. Also, he says, few people know that every major denomination has a powerful environmental statement, some written more than ten years ago.
