Presents, in the ultimate collectible edition, Dave Heath's "Korea: Photographs 1953-1954". Evocative portraits of American soldiers in the Korean War, in a lovingly produced portfolio. The sequence was first shown in 1958 to enormous critical acclaim for the young photographer. "Mr. Heath is a new photographer, and truly a discovery. His pictures reveal compassion, understanding, penetration, and a masterly use of the medium" (The New York Times) . "Heath photographed his fellow soldiers in the winter of 1953-54, the early months of a tenuous truce, producing a suite of introspective portraits permeated with the malaise of war. It is a body of work that defined the young photographer as an artist" (Michael Torosian) . The moving and beautiful portrait of Howard Crawford, Jr. , the accompanying print, embodies this "introspection-cum-malaise" quality. Dave Heath died on July 1, 2016 at the age of 85. An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Heath collectors. This copy is one of only two "Hors de Commerce" copies, indicated/marked as such ("H/C") on the Back Limitation Page by the publisher. It comes with a 7 X 9 inch original silver-gelatin print of "Howard Crawford, Jr, Korea, 1953" that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Dave Heath. The print's titles are embossed directly on recto and printed in black letters on the opposite page ("en face") . It is encased in its own Folio. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Dave Heath books available online command thousands of dollars, rightly so. His vintage prints command tens of thousands. This may be many collectors' best chance to own both a book and an original print by the truly great photographer. A rare signed copy thus. 26 tritone plates, 1 color plate, 1 original silver-gelatin print. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Korea by Dave Heath Reviewing an exhibition of Dave Heath's photographs from Korea, Jacob Deschin of the New York Times, wrote, in 1958, "Mr Heath is a relatively new photographer and truly a discovery. His pictures reveal compassion and understanding, penetration and a masterly use of the medium." Heath had photographed his fellow soldiers in the winter of 1953/54--the early months of a tenuous truce--producing a suite of introspective portraits permeated with the malaise of war. It was a body of work that defined the young photographer as an artist. The 1958 exhibition--a set of virtuoso prints--remained intact, and it is from this exquisite collection that Lumiere Press has shaped our new limited-edition book. Heath's reminiscences of Korea, along with an introductory essay by Michael Torosian, amplify the stunning portfolio of twenty-six black and white photographs and one never-before-seen color image. Korea has been composed in the rare typeface Linotype Falcon, and printed letterpress on Biblio paper, a mould-made sheet. Heath's printmaking has been replicated through stochastic tritone lithography. The images have been printed on Utopia Premium paper and varnished. The book has been hand bound in Japanese Asahi bookcloth and Bugra mould-made paper, patterned in black and gold, over boards. The book measures 7 3/8 x 9 inches; 59 pages. Limited to a numbered edition of 200. , Hardcover, Ausgabe: 1st, Label: Lumiere Press, Lumiere Press, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 2004, Studio: Lumiere Press.
