Preface Upon completion of a work of this scope, mention is usually made of the magnitude of the effort. This dictionary, though, seems to us but first step in this field where terminology is undergoing rapid change. Readers comments and suggestions would therefore be highly appreciated. Being ourselves technical translators and extensive users of dictionaries, we wanted to create a practical-even indispensable-working tool. The choice of terms is designed to reduce, inasmuch as possible, the laborious task of consulting a variety of sources. Cross-referencing with terms that are more than a few pages removed has been avoided as being both superfluous and unpleasant to the reader. The high-legibility font selected should facilitate the frequent user's task, while the arrangement in strictly alphabetical order ensures both greater certainty and a quicker search. The subfield, only indicated for terms subject to confusion, follows the French term to which it applies. When the subfield is given on the left-hand (English) side, it pertains to all French equivalents on the right. British and American spellings are given, with cross-references. For the purposes of this volume, a sort-and-update effort accompanied the terminological research. Indeed, far from being a mere compilation, the work reflects current technological practice.
