Toronto: Dreadnaught, 1982. 128 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "From her adoption of Canada in 1919 to her death, the English-born Emily Warren (1869-1956) was, of all Canadian artists, one of the best known and most honoured abroad. Perhaps the height of her international recognition came in 1939, when she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), an outstanding honour then limited to thirteen living artists at any one time. Yet here in Canada she was not accepted into any art 'establishment' and her visibility in art circles steadily decreased. Today her work is little known except by specialists in nineteenth-century British art, who recognize her as the last painter directly taught and influenced by John Ruskin during his lifetime. McRae traces the progress of Emily Warren through her early development of a mature style and her prominence in Britain as a painter of architecture and landscape. Special attention is given to Warren's years in Canada, beginning with the controversy over the Canadian government's 30-year delay in honouring an informal commitment to purchase her two large World War I memorial paintings, 'Canada's Tribute'. Equally important is the account of Emily Warren's renewed inspiration as a landscape painter in Canada's forests and mountains. (This book) brings alive an exuberant and adventurous personality, a major painter who overcame poverty, illness and artistic neglect to enrich the cultural heritage of Canada." Two ink stamp marks on free front endpaper (one is an address stamp, the other a "With the compliments of..." stamp), a few tiny bumpa to top/bottom edges of boards. Dust jacket has tiny chip at top of front flap-fold, tape on inside top edge ( a few tiny tears), some light edge wrinkling, light edge wear, light rubbing, a few tiny light line indentations on rear panel.. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-. Illus. by Emily Warren..
