Only one thing is certain: credit for their success belongs to Disdéri, court photographer to Napoleon III, who popularized cartes-de-visite by introducing methods of mass production, thus reducing the cost and making them available to millions of people. To the practitioner of this art, willing to exploit the new possibilities, they proved to be a gold mine. By 1860, there were thousands of photographers all over the world who specialized in cartes-de-visite.
