FIVE DAYS IN MAY – THE ALEX SWIFT STORY by Stephen Astor Something compelled me to see and hear the man who had become an overnight sensation. So I blocked off my late afternoon appointments to attend a book signing that I had read about in Sausalito. Sausalito is on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco where I practice medicine. That day, traffic was heavy on the bridge, and by the time I arrived there was standing room only. Obviously there were dozens of other people who were as curious about Alex as I was. The first thing I noticed was that despite the overflow crowd, Alex remained patient and calm. The book signing lasted about an hour during which time Alex read a few excerpts, told several horror stories about managed care (and by that time I can tell you from my own experience in taking care of patients there were many horror stories to tell), and finally he answered questions. After the questions, he sat at a fold-up table and autographed his book. He wrote, "May you never be ill" on the inside cover. Not terrifically original, but it was a pleasant thought. As he sat at the table, I pushed my way through the crowd and introduced myself. We talked a few minutes. I don't recall exactly what we said, but on impulse I invited him to have coffee with me. I was surprised when he agreed, but I didn't question it. I led him and Monica Jordan, whom I later learned was his second wife, to a small table at the back corner of the store. Like most independent bookstores that are trying to compete against the big chains, this one had a mini-cafe on the premises with the requisite herbal teas, cafe lattes, biscotti, and long-haired types sitting there with books and notes spread before them.
