"Building a Children's Literature Collection" first appeared as a two-part bibliographic feature in choice in 1974. In 1975, the two bibliographies "A Suggested Basic Reference Collection for Academic Libraries" and "A Suggested Basic Collection of Children's Books" were issued separately as the third in a series of choice bibliographic essays. Interest in this publication was widespread enough to warrant a revised edition in 1978. The current revision is further evidence of the interest of college and libraries in developing and sustaining collections of both children's books and books about children's literature. Courses in children's literature, and also, and more frequently in the past decade in adolescent literature, are taught by a wide variety of sponsoring departments. Those departments include English, education, librarianship, child development, psychology, and home economics; perhaps there are other sponsors. However - and by whomever - children's and young adult literature are taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels; every professor needs a way to keep current in the literature; and every college and University library in a community where this branch of literature is taught has the same need. In the decade since work on these two bibliographies began, there have been somewhere between 2500 to 3000 children's and young adult books published each year. While some of these books already out-of-print, many are not. The special qualities of a book for young readers that make it a title that should be available to college and University students will probably never be defined to have one satisfaction; that there is a body of literature in this field has been irrefutable for over 50 years.
