When photographic artist Salvatore Mancini approached the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology with the idea of making a visual archive of southwestern petroglyphs, a portion of which would be incorporated into an exhibit and publication, the greater portion to become part of the Museum's permanent collection, we responded with enthusiasm. Mancini's aesthetic interpretations have been placed in anthropological context by essayist Polly Schaafsma. She helped to guide him in selecting sites that would present a comprehensi ve record, representing the four major southwestern prehistoric groups - Anasazi, Fremont, Hohokam and Mogollon - as well as present-day Pueblos, Navajos and Hopi. This catalogue is the result of Mancini's photographic odyssey of 15, 000 thousand miles taken through the states of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. It presents a stunningly impressive visual record of a full range of styles and symbols. The photographs, together with the essay, provide information about the way of life and orientation of the early inhabitants of this country to both physical and spiritual worlds, and as such provide us with insights into our own past.
