It too was brought about by a small band of zealous and dedicated people, working to put across the ideas that have shaped the New Deal of Roosevelt, Truman's Fair Deal; and the New Frontier. And its crowning achievement, today's many-armed federal government, is largely the result of the brilliant efforts of these men and women. It is about this relatively unknown, tightly knit body of intellectuals, organizers, and propagandists-the Fabian Socialists-that Dr. Philip Crane writes. The tremendous changes in American institutions brought about by the writing, speaking, politicking, and chicanery of this tiny band have occurred almost imperceptibly. Beginning early in the century in America's colleges and universities, the Fabians first sought to have their ideas and ambitions understood and accepted by the intellectuals and writers of the country. In keeping with their Utopian, Marxist ideals, they preached pacifism, the brotherhood of man, the redistribution of wealth through government power, and the overthrow of the capitalist. And like Marx they believed that Darwinian laws of nature governed the affairs of men. 04-14-17.
