This is the second volume of Ranald S. Mackenzie's official correspondence relating to Texas. The items included extend from June 6, 187 3, to October 17, 1 879. The previous publication covered the period from March 187 r, to June 187 3. With apologies to those who have read the first volume, the preface and the introduction therein are essentially repeated in this publication for the convenience of those who do not have readily available the preceding volume. Likewise, a copy of Mackenzie's military service record is again included. Among the military officers who participated in the struggle against Indians on the Texas frontier, none was more successful or revered by the citizens of Texas than Ranald Slidell Mackenzie. Between 187 r and 1879 this daring and dedicated officer made western Texas, except for the Trans-Pecos region, safe for occupation by the westward advancing cattlemen and farmers. The troopers of his 4th Cavalry became familiar with almost every Indian trail, peak, stream, and lake between northern Mexico and Palo Duro Canyon and between Jacksboro and the Pecos River. Hardcover, Edition: First Edition, Label: West Texas Museum Assn, West Texas Museum Assn, Product group: Book, Published: 1968-12-01, Studio: West Texas Museum Assn, Sales rank: 8442839.
